The right angle the meander and the start

2020 | Community project followed by an exhibition | Durham municipal gallery, NC, USA

"...Here it must be explained categorically that the guiding principle of a city can be the right angle, the meander or the star. It is this that shapes the course of events which will play out in the city from the very beginning of its existence: the meetings, the collisions, the coincidences. To say nothing of the circulation of the clouds. From the blueprint emerge the exigencies of life..."

During a three-week residency at Durham JCC, following an extensive six month of research, I embarked on an exploration of the Jewish community of Durham and Chapel hill.

I met over a hundred people in workshops with community members ranging in age from 9 to 99. In these workshops I guided participants to translate their daily lives onto a regional map - marking their homes, schools, work and leisure places as well as the routes between them, their bubbles and unexplored places. Alongside these workshops I conducted interviews, went on tours and met with a variety of people to further understand the story of this community. The exhibition is an infographic reflection of my encounters with the people and place.
