L5-S1*

Wall Sculpture, Fresh Paint at Beit Tami, Curator: Carmit Blumenzon | 2019

In this sculpture, Horovitz turns the wall into a body with movement and varying dimensions. A Bulging Disc is an unwanted movement in the spine which most commonly occurs in L5-S1 segment. This movement causes pain but also functions as a warning to pay attention to the body and skeletal functions that we so often take for granted.

From a frontal look, this sculpture is a bulging of the wall inwards. Looking from the side, the viewer discovers small, model like sculptures architectural in shape and organic in color. These objects both create the bulge and are held by it. To see them, the viewer needs to lean on the wall, this is Horovitz’s way to play with her viewers placing an emphasis on their own point of view and relationship between sight and body movement.

*L5-S1 is a spinal motion segment which helps transfer loads from the spine into the pelvis and legs and has distinctive anatomy. It receives a higher degree of mechanical stress and loads compared to the segments above. These characteristics may make L5-S1 susceptible to traumatic injuries, degeneration, disc herniation, and/or nerve pain.
